How Early Head Start Home Visitors Foster or Impede Shared Decision-Making with Families

Rather than professional-driven decisions, shared decisions are central to family-centered philosophy and practices. This qualitative study investigated how four home visitors 12 families engaged in institutional decision-making about 16 infants toddlers enrolled Early Head Start. The following research question was addressed: How do visitor discursive strategies contribute family participation during their child? Discourse analysis of detailed visit transcripts focused on two phases decision-making: (1) opened decision-making, (2) signaled the opportunity for participate making a choice. Although eight approaches were identified across both phases, only aligned with features decision-making. Instead, predominantly used unilateral that drew professional curricular authority narrow could child. Unilateral set stage enact recommendations without meaningful participation, created context where subtly exert control over families. Examining details unfolded contributes nuanced information what – not sound like, offers insight into better equitable partnerships
